Keep in mind that the best album of the decade, and the album that defines the decade may be completely different. Especially considering most mainstream stuff this decade is relatively mediocre.

Wouldn't want to give an album, but HORSE the band defines both the rise in underground hardocre/metal and the popular surgance of electronic music.

"As the Roots Undo" is a solid album. Wouldn't say its the album of the decade though.

Audioslave's self titled album also came out this decade.

Personal favourites more than anything else.

i agree with you on your definition of defining.

though i wouldn't be surprised if shitty good charlotte jonas brothers pop (+ twilight) does in fact define the 00s as the generation for the pre-pubescent girl

I don't get what's so good about merriweather post pavilion, terribly overrated album. I think Radiohead's Kid A is the defining album of the 2000's

We complain about it now.. but I suppose in a few years time we'll look back and appreciate it more.

it is overrated but still pretty great. though if this is the decade of heavy, inaccessible (to some at least) experimentation, then strawberry jam will come out on top.
