hi all,

the university applications are due tommorow and i am still unsure of what to study in uni.

my desired preference is commerce @ unsw however i received an atar of 93 with 2 bonus points for a band 6 in english, however it is not enough to get into the degree according to last years cut offs.

my current options (assuming i dont get an offer for commerce) are as follows:

b/economics @ unsw - only problem is this degree has a compulsory QMA subject and my math is definitly not up to scratch, furthermore the economics degree seems less prestigious and desired than the commerce degree which leads me to another option

doing a BA and attempting to transfer t the end of the first year, this will require a WAM minimum of 75, which im not sure how difficult as i have no experience regarding university standards.

my final option is doing a Bbus at UTS - the problem is this degree seems below par compared to the commerce degrees at unsw / usyd etc.

any help or advice would be much appreciated THANKS!

Do economics. Don't fuck around with arts as your UAI (and your uni marks) should be high enough to transfer with if you don't get into commerce first time around.

It's not that UNSW economics is less prestigious than commerce. It's that economics is more restricted and specialised in what you can study, namely economics itself. Everyone does commerce because its a broad degree with a wide variety of majors to choose from. In economics, you're either stuck with economics, financial economics or econometrics.

And yes, QMA is a bitch but so is university in general so what's new...

thanks for the advice,

but hypothetically if i were to do a commerce degree and choose economics as 1 of my majors and say marketing as another

how is that different to say if i was to do an economics degree and choose marketing as a second major?

You graduate with a commerce degree instead of an economics degree and your first year required courses are different from the economics first year courses (If i remember correctly as first year has changed significantly for 2010 cohort).

They have now changed the structure of the core for Commerce and Economics degrees for 2010. Your going to have to do maths subjects no matter if you choose commerce or economics. In commerce you still have to do QMB which is even more of a bitch than QMA, so no escape from those maths and stats shit.

If you dont get into commerce do Eco, its basically all the same shit, except in economics you have to do 1 eco major, and 1 other major from commerce (except actuarial). So BComm (economics and marketing) = BEc (economics and marketing).

And its hard to get a 75+ WAM, i dont care what anyone says, especially if you have to do both QMA and QMB in the same year. If you want to fuck around and do Arts, and then not get a 75+ WAM, then your stuck in Arts.

I disagree. I think a lot of people have a poor work ethic first year, which they pick up later. A 75 wam is doable first year if you put in the work, even an 85WAM. 1st year subjects are the easiest subjects!

Never do Arts just to try and transfer. You won't get the marks you need to transfer (which, because it's Arts, will most likely mean an 85+ WAM) and you'll end up wasting a semester or year.
BBus at UTS is an incredibly good degree. In terms of quality, prestige and opportunity, there is very little difference between Comm at USyd or UNSW and BBus at UTS. They have slightly different content emphasis, but that depends upon what you want to do after uni.

Are you serious?
I thought UNSW's new internal transfer system would allow anyone with an 75+WAM to tranfer...

No. It's not just "get a distinction-average and you can do whatever the hell you want". The harder the degree you're trying to transfer into, the higher marks you'll need, and likewise as the degree you're doing gets easier.
Besides, I was exaggerating. In reality, I have no idea what you would need to transfer from Arts. I can, however, garuantee you're going to need a lot more marks than to transfer from Economics. My point was that you should do something as close possible the desired degree and transfer, not just Arts, because that will be taken into consideration by the Board.

How is an Arts degree harder than a commerce one ?
As far as I know, the Atar allocated to each course is not determined by difficulty, but by demand...tbh, I don't agree that art is "easier" than commerce.
I don't know if you go to UNSW, but this kinda contradicts what you said

So much fail.
Arts is easier than Commerce. You haven't done either, so how would you know? I do Commerce, and I've read through the stuff that my friends do for their Arts degrees. I can tell you know, that Arts is a shit easy degree. Granted, there are certain parts of Arts that may actually approach some level of primary-school difficulty, such as the languages, but the vast majority of it is piss-easy, subjective dribble. I have friends who are sitting on HD averages and who spent most of the semester tipsy at the Unibar. Try doing that for Comm.
Yes, ATAR is allocated according to demand. Which in turn begs the question of why Arts degrees always have a lower ATAR than Comm. Maybe it's because no-one sensible actually wants to waste three years of their life for a certificate worth less than the paper it's written on. However, if there is a certain profession which requires a BArts (in Education, for example), then that's all well and good, but otherwise people doing Arts are clinically insane.
Those requirements for transfer are the minimum standards you need to even be considered. Are you honestly stupid enough to think that if there were only one spot left for Commerce transfers and it came done to a choice between an Economics student with a WAM of 80 and an Arts student with a WAM of 80, that they would honestly say yes to the Arts student?

I agree with moll, getting a HD average for Commerce(Accounting) is a trillion times harder than getting a HD average for Arts. The hours you spend studying for Commerce is incredible. You can't compare the difficulty of Commerce and Arts, because there is no comparison. Commerce clearly wins.

Ok, from what you guys have said, people (person A) who couldn't get into Law, Commerce (international) or Medicine with their current ATAR and are looking to do Arts in the first year then transferring in the second have a lower chance of getting into anything they want because someone else(person B) from economics, commerce or science have also applied to those courses that person A wanted ?

If so, how is it possible for people who did Arts in the first year given the opportunity to transfer to Law/arts in the second, given that ATAR doesn't play part-only WAM, in the new internal transfer program at UNSW?

@tommykins
So, whatever UNSW puts on their website is not reliable. How about people working in the business faculty? On open day, I had some interest in the new transfer system, so I asked one of the business faculty people regarding this and they said if someone gets a >75WAM, its a guarantee entry to Commerce or Economics degree. I even asked what about for someone doing Arts, would they be able to transfer to Commerce if they had a 75WAM and the guy said "yes".

No, you gotta learn how to weed out these inconsistencies. Some shit on their website is bull, seeing as my mate transffered from Eng/Comm to Law with only 72 WAM.

If you don't already know ATAR's are inflated then I won't continue this discussion.

I am so tempted to replace Commerce with Engineering and Arts with Commerce.

I understand what you're saying. But I'm just confuse at the moment because conflicting views on this Arts thing. I know a few friends who are taking the Arts road and then transferring and I'm a little worried for them thats all-since both you and moll are saying doing Arts is not a good idea for transferring in the second year

If you want to transfer into commerce, i don't see why you wouldn't opt to do economics? it's related to your field, and some units may carry through.
