hey guys I have a few questions abt actuarial studies
how good is the actuarial program at unsw compared to macquariee ?
wat are the best combined degrees including actuarial studies?
how hard is actuarial studies?
wat is a decent average in actuarial studies?
wat is the maths like ? i've herd it's very different to hsc

- com/economics or com/science (maths/stats)
- overrated - you work hard, you will be fine
- 75+ (distinction+)
- interesting but different, involves conceptual understanding rather than repetitive application in hsc maths

Agreed. Also, you'll be dealing more with statistics, rather than mathematics.

No, not really; that'd be more useful for Engineering and Physics. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actuarial_science. Although mathematical/statistical, it is fundamentally concerned with the applications that these disciplines have on commerce-related disciplines, such as finance and insurance.

Macquarie is better than UNSW for Actuarial. I go to UNSW actuarial btw.

No. Just touch up on probability and loan repayments and you should be fine.

Also integration plays a huge role in probability theory, so you might want to review that as well.

would it be beneficial to do it under a comm/adv math degree or is that just not worth the extra year?

i was thinkin that as well but i wud say no
justt becausee the adv math degree is just an extra yr for honours
under the normal comm/sci degree u can still choose the higher level of maths which makes the "adv math"
then if u do well they probz will let u proceeed to honours anyway

+ if ur doing actuarial u shud really be trying for honours in that not sciencee

adv maths is essentially same as b sci (math) with honours, but with adv maths, you have to do certain courses like SCIF that are pointless. Plus a double major in maths and stats is possible under b sci

You can also do Quantitative Risk in Advanced Maths.

Quantitative Risk is essentially maths with finance. It is pointless to combine quantitative risk with actuarial due to the fact you could just double major in finance and actuarial to do most of the same courses in only 3 years.

I did 4U, but I struggled with Perms and Combs and Probability (Harder 2U) during the HSC. I'm fine with the calculus related topics though. Do you reckon I would have a hard time w/ actuarial studies?

UNSW is credit and above for Part 1, 70% for Part II. Macquarie is credit and above.

its seems that 70% average across all subjects for part I exemptions

and only 70% in ACTL for Part II exemption

A lot of people seem to say this. Are there any reasons for this? or is it just a common misconception
