what's the desired atar for most accounting cadetships?
It's already been said but just to confirm as long as you get the score to get into one of the uni's listed in the contract or if not specified any course with an accounting/information systems major, that you can study part time, which will allow you to be eligible for the CA program once completed they should be fine with it. :)

Is Ilikecat's joking? How the hell would they let that happen, that gives me hope cause ive been estimated around 88-91 by my principal.
Also, @Ilikecats, if your atar was that low (no offense), what were your extra-curricars? What got you in?

I am not kidding you.

I had a lot of academic awards from school (ie. First in classes in year 9,10,11,12, and other various merit achievements), I have played a lot of sports (Netball & Hockey at rep levels, as well as softball, tennis, swimming, athletics and golf), and a bit of community work, such as the red shield appeal for 4 years and legacy day.

To be fair, English was my best subject at school and I found thinks like writing a resume etc to be easy. I'm not an overly confident person in interviews, but I went prepared. I knew why I was doing this, I was prepared with what would be expected from me (as my brother also did a cadetship) and I didn't come dressed like some lazy bogan.

I may have gotten an ATAR of 72, but my subject choices weren't geared towards getting 99.95, they were subjects I wanted to do. Why did I drop to standard English when I was one of the top in my grade in advanced? Purely because I enjoyed the topics for standard better. :)

If you can prove your going to work hard and give it your all, and show that you make effort in many areas of your life, there isn't a reason why you won't get a cadetship :p

ilkiecats is very much telling the truth. My friends friend got an ATAR in 70s and is doing Commerce (Accounting) at UWS, and he has a cadetship, from memory it was a mid tier but yeah even UWS peeps get in

i got an ATAR of 81.5, would that be good enough to get into a Big 4 company? ( the other things i can say is that I got trained (like work but under supervision) at 7/11 and the local newsagent, played weekend and school cricket, played school AFL and soccer, oh and my dads an accountant too so he showed me the processes, paperwork etc of an accountant)

I was very upfront about going to UWS too.

I said (as only early offers had come out at the time), that I would be attending UWS. I would like to attend Macquarie, but as it's unlikely to happen, I'll be at UWS. (In the end, UWS was the only way I would have been able to balance full time work/part time study because I wouldnt have been able to get home from Macquarie :p)

If you're already in uni, then I assume your uni marks will also be considered but you need to already be doing the right courses/etc.

You don't have to be rude about it, it is not solely focused on academics compared to the UNSW Co-op etc.

the low atar required for some cadetships make the credit/distinction average required to get into firms at a graduate level all the more ridiculous.

Most kids now seem to have a mentality that the ATAR is something that defines you for the rest of the life, trust me once you step into uni all that changes just like it changes when you go in for a job. Sure you need to show a certain degree of achievement to be considered, however I know many people holding key positions in companies that actually have minor academic achievements.

I got into the Game Changers club for EY this year and had a chance to meet some of the other kids, they were all either from Melbourne Uni or Monash (so Atars of 90+) and I can tell you now half of them even if they did try to apply wouldn't get cadetship. Firstly there were those who asked the presenter questions however were so nervous that you could barely understand them, so they would most probably crack when it came to the partner interview stage. Then afterwards when we interacted with some of the employees most people seemed to just shut off and not really interact at all with the graduates and recruiters.

What I am trying to say is that you have to really be an all rounded person and posses traits beyond the academics.

I pretty much wrote that for my own self confidence as much for the rest of you Lmao.

Best of luck to all :)

When getting interviewed face to face, will it be interviewers from the 1st preference service area you want to be in? Or can it be from any service area of the accounting firm?

Also does the person interviewing you decide which service area you go into? Say your first preferance is Assurance-financial services, and second is Assurance. I know people who got chosen for their second preferance but not the first. Would it be as simple as first come first serve?

Yeah, im doing B Commerce (majoring in accounting) at Mac Uni, so far im doing Accounting 1A, Techniques and elements of finance, Management Principles and Introductory Stats. Im getting Credits for Management and Accounting (probably be Distinction after the assignment tho) and HDs in statisitcs and finance. Also these arent my final score fo these subjects, would it matter that they are not?

I think it would be better to be on the safe side, and say, my current marks for these are blah blah blah, and then state that your final grades will be released in early July or whenever. I know most subjects I've done have had 50% or more on the final exam, so it's very hard to say what most people's final marks will be, because it can so easily change if you screw up, or do fantastic, in exams.

That being said, if you can I'd wait until you know your results to apply. I think some applications close before then, so I'd include the disclaimer on your grades :)

Ohk thanks, got my STAT assignment back today, not good. Brings it down to Distinction now :(. And my finals weightings are: Management = 40%, Techniques/elements of finance = 50%, Accounting and Statistics = 60%. Im confident i can get atleast 80 for both Accounting and Finance, i think i can get atleast a 75 for statistics, just worried about management. And yes results come in July. thanks for input :)

Let's not kid ourselves here though, whilst academics aren't the main or sole factor at either cadetship, intern or graduate level, they are of some importance as they are not only indicative of your ability to do well in the education system but are a proxy for your ability and willingness to learn/commit yourself to learning.

The other point you raise regarding C/D average at graduate level is a different thing altogether. As far as I know, the big 4 don't use this sort of academic criteria per se (at least not from what I've seen) other than in the most exclusive of roles (namely the consulting/advisory practices), but I'd guess this is more a case of supply and demand for the jobs (and hence the need to use some form of criteria to differentiate candidates) rather than a genuine requirement for the role.

Most kids now seem to have a mentality that the ATAR is something that defines you for the rest of the life, trust me once you step into uni all that changes just like it changes when you go in for a job. There's no hard and fast rule on this and it'll vary by firm to firm. There may even be last minute changes to who is available to do interviews on the day for other factors (e.g. client meeting comes up, partner is unwell, etc). I wouldn't think too much about it. For what it's worth, in my experience it's usually someone in the area but not necessarily the industry specialisation that you've applied for.

Its been a while since I've been here, but I met a couple of you at the info evening the other night, & thought I'd check in.

A bit of background - I graduated from high school in 2011, and did my interview rounds at the big 4 firms & BAcc. I'm in my second year of uni, & started working at one of the big 4 in February.

I'll be happy to impart any knowledge/insight either about the application process, interviews or my experience from working, so feel free to shoot me your questions :)

Hard to say but I guess given you're still so early on, your HSC marks/results are probably more relevant since they are locked down.

Could someone please tell me if Hall Chadwick recruits first years or not.
The application form seems to suggest that they only take in kids from year 12, however their website gives no information regarding this or anything in general to do with the cadetship program.
