Liberal MP calls for increased refuge intake

A Liberal backbencher has called for Australia's official refugee intake to double now that the flow of asylum seeker boats has stopped.
Wyatt Roy wants the 13,750 places in the humanitarian refugee program increased twofold once the current backlog of asylum seeker claims is cleared.
'With hard-won border integrity comes the confidence to raise our humanitarian program to new heights,' Mr Roy said in an opinion piece for The Australian.
The Queensland MP spent a week with border protection personnel on operations out of Darwin as part of a special parliamentary program.
'These dedicated men and women are relieved to no longer be plucking the bodies of perished children, parents and grandparents from the ocean,' he said.
There have been an estimated 1100 drownings at sea since 2008.
2013 was a record year with 300 asylum seeker boats and 20,587 people arriving.
The Abbott government's border protection crackdown has resulted in only one boat arrival so far in 2014.
The government cut the previous Labor government refugee intake from 20,000 to 13,750.

The government should invest more in schools, hospitals, specifically more in education instead of this. Other countries are passing Australia academically and we are falling back on statistics.

Forget the government, the education, other countries, the economy, we people have fallen.These people have no hospital to go to and you are worried about not getting a VIP treatment at a hospital, they have no had no education, Forget the statistics because if it were their fault then we can understand but even then that would not be the conditions they should be facing. Because of the fact that, of the amount of refugees accepted worldwide during a one year period, we are second per capita in the world for our intake of refugees... Unless the rest of the world is willing to increase their intake, I don't think Australia should particularly be obliged to do so...

Nothing racial or xenophobic about it, we already do enough in relation to refugee intake (the same, however, cannot be said about our treatment of asylum seekers... That is a very different debate with genuine viewpoints from both sides, disregarding the xenophobic rhetoric)

2nd per capita in the world? Yeah more like last place on the planet. Jordan, Pakistan, Germany, Kenya EASILY beats us in having more refugees. The rest of the world is already increasing their intakes. We are second in relocation which doesn't really mean shit when its only like 10k a year.

Who gives a shit about economic impact when this is an HUMANITARIAN aspect. Do you seriously suggest that we cannot afford it? Puhleez. We spend so much time "stopping the boats" we divert attention and resources away from fuckers who rort our visa system and we don't put in place enough investigative staff.

Lots of Aussies are natively from what would be considered "Refugee" background, if you're italian, greek, irish, eastern euro blooded that came her since 1910, you pretty much have family members who are getting the fuck out of europe for good reason. same goes for the massive waves of lebanese during the 80s.

You do realize most refugees coming in are Sri Lanken right? other two groups are Afghani and Iraqi, which we helped completly fuck up their livelhoods.

I do agree that Sharia courts shouldn't exist in any non-muslim country, one country ONE legal system. However, sharia courts in the UK are purely for arbitration purposes and have very little difference between regular arbitrator procedures.

Of all the Muslim threats, this seems the most potent. It actually has "sharia" in the name. UK law has some scope to acknowledge the customary or religious laws of both Jews and Muslims. But going by the coverage, it would seem it is only Muslims that have both demanded and been granted exception. On closer inspection, it is clear sharia courts only have jurisdiction on civil matters and everyone must opt in to a sharia court. They only have an advisory capacity and address mainly property and financial matters, and rulings are then only enforceable by civil courts. In many cases, they are understaffed affairs, where one official settles petty disputes and draws up rudimentary documents.

So sharia courts aren't really enforceable and are only advisory. Yeah muslims dominating everything.
