How is that relevant?
Its relevant considering he can't use the first principle to solve a derivative, and if he is in year 12, then i believe it could be quite detrimental to their HSC. It's one thing just showing them how to do it but if they don't understand the concept behind it then they're never gonna know how to do it.

Your point could have been demonstrated if you said "Tell me your not in year 11 or 12.."
