  • I have a question regarding my Engineering Studies assignment on braking systems. The braking system that I have chosen to research is the "Air brake system" in trains. Can anyone provide a description of how this braking system operates because there is not enough information on the internet.

    Thanks!

Hey, here's some information which I believe may be helpful:

Air brakes use compressed air rather than hydraulic fluid. At idle, air pressure overcomes the diaphragm, resulting in a released brake system. When you depress the brake pedal, the air pressure decreases, turning the s-cam and spreading the brake shoes against the drum. Air pressure is then used to apply the service brakes.
