Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

Okay, there was no need to re-post that. Oh, and there was never any real media hype about this. Just a few insane/ignorant jerks sending death threats to CERN scientists.

No-one said that the world was going to end.

Macquarie University Open Day - Who's going?

I love how far unis will go to get you in. I'm going to MQ anyways, so I won't be needing any fortune cookies.

Macquarie University Open Day - Who's going?

MQ give out fortune cookies on open days...? I mean, it was weird enough when UTS gave out giant lollipops.

Macquarie University Open Day - Who's going?

MQ has a campus in the city. Well, it's really MGSM. But close enough. I might be going to the open day.

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

Re: R: Larg Hadron Collidr - Dath Thrats http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawking_radiation So I'm guessing that this would be something similar to regular radioactive decay. Except with black holes.

    MY Future Needs Help!

I'm almost at the end of year 12, and I still don't know what I really want to do...

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

Right. Well I was just quoting what a physics lecturer told me... So if a micro black hole formed, and Hawking radiation didn't exist, then it would just instantly absorb the earth?

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

Apparently sealing a micro black hole in a vacuum helps contain it... Or that's what some physics lecturer told me.

This has already been mentioned: It might help to read the rest of the thread first.

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

While I'm sure you have good reasons to believe it, not every 08er here is stupid beyond comprehension. At least I did some research. Wikipedia might not be the most reliable source, but it's good enough for the purposes of this thread.

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_of_the_Large_Hadron_Collider#Micro_black_holes If black holes were created in the LHC, they'd be quite small, and would most likely dissipate through Hawking Radiation. Also, the LHC isn't powerful enough to create micro black holes that easily.

Large Hadron Collider - Death Threats

Hey, don't dismiss the rap. It's quite accurate, and it makes particle physics just that little bit easier to understand. I'm not worried about this. Even if a black hole was created, it can easily be contained by shutting down the LHC, and creating a vaccuum environment so the black hole...

Kangaroo meat is awesome. I once ate a kangaroo burger and damn, it was good!

"Eat less meat to fight climate change" - UN

Well if it comes to having to eat less meat, then you could easily take iron supplements to make up for the lower iron intakes you'd be getting. Also, tofu and fish are good sources of iron. And as jb_nc said, there are some health risks associated with comsumption of meat. But not having meat...

[citation needed] That sounds familiar... You have some very valid points there. Universities are for higher learning. They're not meant to be the big businesses they're turning into.

    maths help

    Re: maths help needed ASAP tan (x-60) = sqrt(3) x-60 = 30 degrees (tan sqrt(3) = 30, using exact values) therefore, x = 90 ... I think that's right... Edit: Wait, no... since tan sqrt(3) = 30, tan (x-60) = 30 therefore, x = 90.
