    The future for law students

unsure if you're being sarcastic, but i'd favour a summary of hard facts citing sources over a random government opinion, which is actually compiled by the department of education, not from ABS data. part of what the blog emphasises is that our public university system makes a lot of money from...

    The future for law students

what does BOS think the next 5 years will be like for law students? on another forum I came across lawgrads.weebly.com which makes the points: australia has 30,000 law students at 36 law schools but only 60,000 lawyers and only 12,000 at mid-size firms or above 24% of lawyers at...

    Wam

I have no idea if this will help you, but Frigid has a very useful thread that, although it regards transfers, outlines how the WAM is calculated. When you talk about a "final WAM" you may be talking about something different to what I'm thinking.

Student unions 'on brink of extinction'

Unions aren't all bad  Some universities trust their unions (as demonstrated by the fact some have chosen to provide additional funding to them, to lessen the impact of VSU). I said that it would be up to the university to allocate funds, if they want to take on the responsibilities that...

    Gaining Healthy Weight

What are you doing right now that isn't working? My advice is to buy some dumbells and start lifting. If you're keen, go and buy some protein (drink it after every workout). A few months and you should be a bit bigger ;)

Student unions 'on brink of extinction'

This is my thinking, also, however I think the funds should go to the university, earmarked for essential services. The university can then pass it on to the union (if the union is organising these things). I think that's a good way to go. Anything else the union wants to do (you know the kind...

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

Himmy, lets keep it civilised. We're all friends here  Wouldn't want to hijack the threat or anything . I think with an ENTER of 94.9 you'll be safely in (don't quote me). I would be surprised to see a BA that requires more than 95! The Melbourne University website says the...

    languages

You should contact UNSW if you want a direct answer. I don't know if you will have enough electives that can be taken from another faculty to enroll in many language courses. What you can do is do a Diploma in Languages alongside your degree.

Student unions 'on brink of extinction'

Although VSU meant that union membership would decline, a 95% drop in membership is massive. It demonstrates how irrelevant the unions were to most students, because if students felt that their money was going towards valuable services, there would not have been such a substantial drop. I think...

    General Question: Commonwealth supported places....

I think this is also the case with permanent residents, the government will contribute but you can't defer your contribution through the tax system. Someone correct me if I am wrong?

USYD DFEE Law vs UTS CSP Law >.>

I don't see why a law firm would have any reason to lie in that survey about where they recruit from. Look at the websites of the top firms and check out the profiles of partners. They come from a wide variety of universities (and not just in Australia!). UTS is not as well-established (and thus...

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

ANU is a case in point of how I think things should work: they have a graduate medicine program, to which you are admitted based upon your GPA and GAMSAT results. I think they also have a program where students with 98+ UAI's are given a provisional offer to graduate medicine? (provided they...

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

Yes, I was trying to provide an extreme example. I can't make any first-hand observations, but I wouldn't think it requires a 95+ UAI to pass a law course (according to the Law FAQ, the Dean of USyd Law said a UAI of 80 is enough, in terms of intelligence). That's what I think, which leads me...

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

I'm not advocating that we go down the American path of presitge-driven private universities. I just think if law was more like medicine in its admission system, then people who do it for the sake of it wouldn't bother. I would rather everyone do a liberal undergraduate degree, then go on the...

    Transferring from DFEE to CSP?

Yep (I suppose I should have said "phased out" as opposed to "abolished").

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

I agree completely, hence my preference for the American system, where law students are mature (well, more mature than the 18 year old school leaver!) and have already completed university study. Look, I don't do Legal Studies but I am pretty set on studying law in the future, I know that...

    Transferring from DFEE to CSP?

With a UAI of 98.9 you should have absolutely no trouble transferring from DFEE to CSP at UNSW. If I were you, I would spend my first year at UTS (or another university, just to save money) as a CSP student and then transfer across. Your UAI is so close to the cut-off that, so long as you...

    Transferring from DFEE to CSP?

Unless you reveal your UAI, it will be hard to assess your chances of getting a transfer. Transfers are 50% UAI and 50% GPA. With regards to going from DFEE to CSP, you can apply to transfer at the end of every year (not just the first). Obviously you would want to try your best during your...

'Law school applicants compete for fewer places'

Time will tell. I was simply saying that is what I think will happen sometime down the track. ANU and UTS have already introduced JD's, and I'm sure others will follow. As to if the undergraduate LLB will go, that is speculation but I think it will happen eventually. I didn't say medicine =...
