What about Destroying Avalon by Kate McCaffrey? It's young adult fiction with a small dose of romance. Or Delirium by Lauren Oliver (Delirum series)? It's romance/sci-fi. More of a romance after the first novel.

From my knowledge, the agriculture portion of the entrance exam for Hurlstone last year for year 8s going into year 9 was basically an essay based on a stimulus (newspaper article relating to some agricultural issue).
