    The 4U James Ruse trial...

Nope, not involved in writing it. I'm honoured that you think so however. :-D

    The 4U James Ruse trial...

This is a nice paper, even though the question difficulty does vary somewhat.

    Ruse Trial up.

This has already been posted in the other thread. I liked question 8.

Ruse paper can now be posted

It's been posted now. http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?p=1871883#post1871883 I thought that some of the questions were harder than they looked. Question 1 in particular has some of the harder 4U integrals.

How are any Accelerated Students Coping?

Not really all that much time. There are about 30 people doing it. I'm in year 11 with 14 units (incl cosmology, not including SDD which I already did) Next year I'll have 8 units. :) SDD was kind of really easy, but so boring you didn't want to study it.

    ...Too easy...

The questions for the IMO this year can be found at: http://www.imo2005.org/examinations.htm

    ...Too easy...

Casebash is too used to olympiads, where you have an hour or more per question, and the average mark is quite low, so speed and accuracy aren't as much of an issue. (Median mark at IMO this year: 12/42)

    Maths comp

They're supposed to be rushed, otherwise there would be too many very high or perfect scores. I just finished (changed an answer with about 7 seconds to go - forgot to check the x = 2 solution in the question with all the square roots, and realised it didn't work right at the end). (EDIT...

How are any Accelerated Students Coping?

It's purely by correspondance, except for two residentials of a few days each. It's pretty interesting.

ASAP help needed on MAX/MIN questions

    1. Let dimensions be x, x and y. Surface area = 2x^2 + 4xy = c (a constant) Therefore 4xy = c - 2x^2 y = c/4x - x/2 Volume (V) is (x^2)y = cx/4 - (x^3)/2 V' = c/4 - (3/2)x^2 When V' = 0, c/4 = (3/2)x^2 Therefore x^2 = c/6 Therefore x = (c/6)^(1/2) (x represents a length, and lengths are...

Anyone good at max and min probs?

    Finishing this off... 4x^2 + 6xy = 300 6xy = 300 - 4x^2 y = 50/x - (2/3)x Volume (V) = x * 2x * y = 2(x^2)*y = 100x - (4/3)x^3 V' = 100 - 4x^2 When V' = 0, 4x^2 = 100 x^2 = 25 x = 5 (x is a length, and lengths are positive) V'' = -8x, which is negative at x = 5...

Max and Min help needed ASAP

(Note: My x is differant to rama_v's x, sorry for any confusion) I interpreted this question somewhat differently to rama_v, I think it means that the wire is used to make all of the rectangle and square, not just the bases. Let the piece of wire used to make the square be x cm, and the...

    Maths comp

Yes, 13 is the answer to the last question. For the octahedron question, if the verticies are A,B,C,D,E,F, then the volume closest to A isexactly the same as the volume closest to B, and so on, as the octahedron is perfectly symmetric, and as no point can be both closest to A and closest to B...

Ok, I see what you mean now. The problem with that is that when you rotate that diagonal line around the L-shaped corner, the area of the big bottom-left piece does not stay constant. When the two smaller areas are equal, the gradient of the line is -2.5, and both smaller areas are equal to 80.

    Maths Competition

I'm not sure I follow. You're saying the bottom left piece has area 200, and the others have areas which sum to 200, so the smaller of them must be 100? a + b = 200 does not necessarily mean that min(a,b) => 100 Is this what you mean?

    Bio: Science Ollympiad

You can do as many of the NQEs (National Qualifying Exams) as you want, and then they invite the top 25 (20?) to a 2 week or so camp in January, and there and during the next term they pick the team from those people to represent Australia at the international olympiad. The camps for each...

How are any Accelerated Students Coping?

I think accelerating is really good because it gives you an idea what the HSC is like in year 11 (or 10), and it also takes some of the workload and stress off in year 12. I did SDD (Software Design and Developement) in year 10 (Ruse accelerates everyone who does SDD or IPT in years 9-10)...

No posting of Ruse Extension 2

The line "As 2 approaches infinity" pretty much sums up what's wrong with it, but I think it's funny.
