You need to use binary - i didn't even know this was in the IPT syllabus.

Anyway, what you need to do is convert those decimal numbers (2, 4 and 1) to binary to see which option is correct.

Example:
  • Convert 20 to binary
    20/2 = 10 (+ remainder 0)
    10/2 = 5 (+ remainder 0)
    5/2 = 2 (+ remainder 1)
    2/2 = 1 (+ remainder 0)
    1/2 = 0 (+ remainder 1)
Then you read the binary number from the bottom up - hence 20 in decimal is 10100 in binary.

So in this question, your three decimal numbers are: 2, 4, 1

  • Convert 2 to binary:
    2/2= 1 (+ remainder 0)
    1/2 = 0 (+remainder 1)
So the binary number is 10
which is the same as 010 (you can put as many zeros in front as you like)
  • Convert 4 to binary
    4/2 = 2 (+remainder 0)
    2/2 = 1 (+ remainder 0)
    1/2 = 0 (+ remainer 1)
So the binary number is 100
  • Convert 1 to binary
    1/2=0 (+ remainder 1)
So the binary number is 001
So your answer is B

I'm skeptical as to whether you really need to know this - they could well have changed the syllabus since 2003 (which this HSC question is from)

They ask that sortof Q in the multiple choice I believe.

For us, our teacher made us learn it.. although, it isn't really that hard since it's the same as what we learnt back in year8 mathematics.

I'm too tired to do that Q- but it looks very familiar. Looks like something out of the practice paper book I used last year.

I'm pretty sure binary was covered in the Prelim course rather than the HSC course, so it's not something that will be all that extensively tested (it's more assume knowledge). But if you know binary, the answer is easy as hell.
