Hey people,

Okay this is a question from the 2003 paper, what do you write? Especially part (c) it's sooooo hard!!!

QUESTION 23 (10 Marks)
Watermelon Electronics is considering setting up a
subsidiary in a developing country to manufacture some of
its components. It could benefit from tax advantages and
lower production costs, yet faces potential problems of a
shortage of skilled labour and differences in labour law.​

(a) Outline ONE employment relations strategy that Watermelon Electronics could
use to overcome the problem of a shortage of skilled labour.

(b) Compare TWO types of organisational structure that Watermelon Electronics
may adopt to cater for this subsidiary.

(c) Evaluate a possible management response from Watermelon Electronics to a
labour law variation that may exist in the developing country.

(b) Centralised/Decentralised
(c) Implement ethical standards that are law in home country. Eg: Use EEO, Unfair Dismissal etc.. in developing countries regardless of the leniant laws the country may have. Application to case study - maximum hours per week as outlined in Australia enforced in developing country

Such strategy can include a thorough training program to help train locals.

(b) Compare TWO types of organisational structure that Watermelon Electronics
may adopt to cater for this subsidiary.


Flat Organisational structure - they could adopt this because focuses on teamwork. Teamwork and responsibility will provide an incentive for workers to work harder (constant strive for improvement - this is good especially when they suck)

Heirachial Structure - would constitute levels of management. This may also be good because supervisors can help to supervise these unskilled employees

(of course you ramble on and on, you get the picture)

(c) Evaluate a possible management response from Watermelon Electronics to a
labour law variation that may exist in the developing country.

They could have a Guideline or Code Of Ethics which ensures a standard treatment of employees ect ect

hold up
does a flat organisational structure mean it is decentralised and hierachical mean it is centralised, because in my textbook all it has is centralised and decentralised. so i think jexi you might be wrong
