hello I'm one of many who aspire to a career in International Relations
......like Department of Foreign Affairs, NGO, UN etc.

I've accepted an offer at ANU ; Asian Studies(specialist)/commerce combined.

- I was wondering though, does anyone reckon that the outcomes of this degree at the end of its 5 years be the closest thing to my career aspirations in International Relations? Say there's no room for B IR etc.. for now even if i wanted to go for the later rounds.

- and does anyone think or find it a hell load of work..doing the combined degree?

oh. and just for flexibilities sake i thought taking commerce might help me gain some foundational knowledge in the business world.... or how does selecting a single degree that reflect my career aspirations and choosing an elective from the department of commerce sound like??

THANKYOU!

Whoa... many questions... 1st of all im doing a sceince degree so ill try and help u out with as much as i know/have heard (my only experience with this was doing the intro to IR course in 1st year) but yeh....
As ur probably aware IR at ANU is really really really popular... and a tiny, tiny, tiny % of those ppl go onto work at places like DFAT, ausaid etc
Firstly the outcome of ur degree will give u broad options... thats one of the advantage of a double degree. as u may already know/will learn aus really wants to get in sweet with the emerging asian economies, china etc... so a asian studies/ commerce degree i assume would set u up reasonably well for that type of stuff (thats just one idea)...
As for the workload.... contact hours may be marginaly above the average, but its not like ur doing extra subjects...
And, if ur not really sure if u want to do commerce, u could take a commerce subject(s) elective (if ur course offers it - i would think it does) in 1st year and see whether it works for u.... and if u like it, just transfer... if not stay put.
Hope this helps out.
