Straight to the point: How well should you know a lecturer/teacher/tutor/academic supervisor before asking them to be a referee if you are applying for a job (especially if it is academically related)? And how important are referees for academically related jobs/internships/vacation work (in general)?

Make sure your referees actually remember your name first... or that could get awkward. Reliable referees are usually those who've known you for over 6 months. More preferable if they've known you between 1-3 years. Anything over that timeframe, might seem a bit too close to be a referee.

For vocational work, I'd say your marks/academic transcript would the most important thing they'll look at. But if the job is more customer/client-based, they may check up on your referees.
