Hey peeps,

can anyone help me with this assessment?

Assess the contributions of Miltiades and Themistocles to the Persian Wars.

Its an essay and its actually the question for the period from last years HSC paper. I need to get it done now so i can finish my history project and PIP.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Rizky

Miltiades was really only important at marathon. He knew the Persian's battle tactics from when they attacked the Chersonese, from which he fled to come back to Athens. The greek strategy (and timing: "the horses are away") was basically his idea and so their win is largely due to him.

Themistocles is remembered chiefly for being an influential politician and convincing the Athenians to use surplus from the silver mines to fund the building of a large navy, knowing that the Persians would come again, and by sea. He also brought about the victorious battle of salamis by his message to Xerxes that the greeks were retreating. That's all I can remember atm.

Herodotus and Plutarch have a lot of good quotes on them. If you can get your hands on Bury & Meiggs, that's a good secondary source.
