I use to use FLASKmpg, I found it to be a very good video conversion program. I haven't used it for ages, but it did have some minor bugs, they might be fixed now though.

Look on google to find it.

even 'backing up' is a poor excuse for wanting to know how to rip DVD -> DivX/XviD/etc.. Seeing as though backing up is illegal now..

I use Nero 6 with a DVD burning plug-in, now it claimed that it 'may' have some incompatibilities since i installed Service Pack 2.
I still use it, it works and still reliable

DVD Decrypter is only a ripping tool and as far as i know, Dvdshrink just re-encodes the mpeg file into a lower bitrate (a similar bitrate avi would look nicer).

for burning programs, i don't know of any legal free ones but something should have come bundled with your dvd burner

gordianknot is a program that you use to encode DivX avis (and Xvid, etc)

well it's actually a few programs tied together but for all intents and purposes that's what it is :)
