Biomedical engineer- Who is doing it? (1 Viewer)

neone ere doing biomedical engineering, or considering it?...is it better at USYD or UNSW because UNSW is best at engineering in aus, however Usyd is very strong in the biomedical sciences. Also what is the career prospect of a biomed degree. like what is the chance of finding a job in your local area.

im looking atm biochem engineering at UMELB. it depends upong whether you want to do research in human related feilds or just more bio related. Usyd and Umelb are always in contention between whos 'best' at biology and related feilds. imo umelb has better industry ties as far as bio research is concerned. however wanting to bio research, unless there is an existing interest in the feild you wish to persue then going overseas is a better option. Australia is really good for teaching you the information, however there isnt enough money to fund research into all the feilds available. well thats at least my conclusion. my interest lies in genetics and cell biology, which is why i want to go to umelb as they ACTUALLY have a biochem eng course, whereas usyd has a chem eng course with 1!!! bio course per year in it in the first 3 years and thus it gains a biochem status :S . but thats just me. if you are interested in human related research look up umelb and its industry ties as there is ALOT of gov. funding atm to companies down there before deciding upong unsw or usyd.

ps im slightly drunk.....aka very.....so take EVERYTHING with a pinch of salt. its up to you though, the information has to be found, ive found, no one has enough interest for them to give it to you on a silver plater.

biomedical engineering at usyd is 4yrs, 5 if combined with other degrees ie. science, med. sci

i dont know very much about jobs and the industry but i'll tell u what little i do know and my impressions

at usyd, doing the biomedical engineering course means that after graduating u will be qualified both as a biomedical engineer and a mechanical engineer. in this sense i guess it could give u more options and flexibility than other engineering degrees.

its really a mechanical eng degree but sort of specialise in biomedical if u know what i mean.

i hear usyd has relations with Ventracor (a heart assist etc. company), and guest speakers etc. come in sometimes. also to complete the degree its compulsory to do 6 months (i think) of vacation work at a company (pretty much like work experience) but u have to find it yourself, and graduates can be offered work when they finish the degree

actually what i noticed was that some of the biomedical companies i looked at dont have that many employees (talking like 30s +), but i'm not really too sure on if its the case generally.

i personally think prospects aren't too bad (well i'm not worried atm of not finding a job), if ur enthusiastic about it u should be able to find something, and i think vacation work would help a fair bit too.

if u want to expand ur options you could combine it with a science/medsci, commerce (that would be a good combo for maximum options) and stuff like that

i guess like the other posters said, it comes down to what kind of career u want and what u want to be doing

hey mate i was looking into doing biomedical engineering also, i had a look at few courses and its a toss up between UTS (mechatronic eng/med sci with major in biomedical) - has alot more qualifications, or UNSW mechatronics with biomedical engieering major

Yeah I had work experience at Ventracor last week and I'm not really interested in biomedical engineering. They also have an agreenment with UNSW - according to one of the project sheets at Ventracor...

It's meant to say, I'm really interested in biomedical engineering.
