I am in year 10 currently. I feel like when I chose my electives I just chose the ones I thought would be fun or the ones that my friends were doing. Looking back, that was kind of a dumb move. I need 12 units for my HSC. Right now, I want to do 3u math, 3u english, chem, bio. I need 2 more units to fall back on and I don't know what to do because I am doing drama and psychology as my electives, both of which are not hsc subjects. i am thinking about doing economics but I don't know if I will be able to do it without any previous commerce, and if so, how much of a disadvantage will i have?

Trust me you'll have close to 0 disadvantage. I did eco in yr 10 and forgot pretty much all the content before going into Year 11. Year 11 goes through everything required, their is no real "assumed" content. Some of my friends who get top grades never did eco or commerce as electives.
