I have researched the top ATAR achievers and at least 98% of them where from a selective or very expensive private school, do public students really have a chance?
What is your opinion?

School scaling? pls

Your school will have NO impact if you're ranked 1st in all your subs.

silly OP, you can get any atar from any school if you do the work lol. not everyone at james ruse gets 99.95 nor does everyone at baulko get a state rank. likewise not everyone in western sydney ends up a tradie

EDIT: it is just statistically more likely that you will get a "better" atar by going to one of those schools

Its easier to get a better atar at a top private/selective school. Because you will feel inclined to study considering the habits of your peers.

Just some food for thought the top 50% of baulko students were sitting on a 90+ internal for advance english.

where did you get that stat from? and by that, do you mean moderated internal? because if so, then wouldn't then also mean roughly 50% of baulko students were sitting on 90+ external, which would then result in the same for internal moderated marks. if you get what I mean?

was this only last year? because we had a really good year last year. I think, the best in at least a decade. or is this a historic average?

yep oblivious is right. i checked http://www.topscores.info/select-nsw.php. which has really good stats btw.

By selecting "HSC Distinguished Achiever Counts per School and Subject", and specifying Baulko below, here's how many band 6s baulko has had each year (note:every year baulko has 200 year 12s and all do English Advanced)

2013: 124
2012: 110
2011: 124
2010: 136
2009: 135

So yes Oblivious seems to be right.

Kudos to this great website. Recommended guys!

You can achieve any ATAR at any school - comprehensive students have achieved ATARs of 99.95 in the past. The reason why 98% of these students go to selective schools (when I say selective, I mean any school that uses an entry exam to screen candidates) is because most of the people with the aptitude to achieve those marks apply for and qualify for such schools.
