just facing a dilemma between sources that contradict each other.

in the chemistry of dry cell what is the oxidation and the reduction reactions?

In a dry cell:

From ANOX REDCAT: Oxidation takes place at the anode: Zn(s) + 2OH- --> ZnO(s) + H2O + 2e- (- is valency)
Reduction takes place at the cathode: 2MnO2(s) + H20 + 2e- --> Mn2O3 (s) + 2OH-

The reductant is usually the MOST reactive metal.
