Hi, my name is Brent and I live in Ontario, Canada. I am taking Bachelor of Communications at UWS next year at Penrith Campus, and I am wondering what to expect. I've never been to Australia before and don't really know what I'm getting myslef into, but I was just wondering if anyone had any information, or knew where I could get information on: the course, residence at penrith, and just in generl anything I should expect from living in Australia it would be very appreciated. I have been to the UWS site and I find that it doesn't offer too much info, but like I said any info will be helpul as I know little about the University or where I'll be living.

Thanks

by the way what is the HSC?

The HSC (Higher School Certificate) is the final exam for High School Students (Year 12) in NSW. The marks attained in the HSC are converted into a rank which students use to apply for university...its kinda like the IB

Hey Guys,

I'm also gonna be coming to UWS to study but i'll be on an exchange coming from York University.... which is in Toronto, Canada!!! I'm a psychology student and while i'm at UWS i'll be studying a mixture of different classes and i'll be at BANKSTOWN CAMPUS and also be living on campus there at KIEMAH residence!!
Like kitty litter said, there isn't THAT much info about residence and alll that stuff so i was wondering if there is anything i should prepare for with regards to campus and residence?? Is it clean? Loud? Fun.. etc...
The campus website said that it's approx 30 minutes from the harber.. is that accurate or will it take longer on transit vs driving? and how far are the pretty beaches?? hahaha can't wait.. it's starting to get cold here brrrrrrrrr (opposite seasons) as i know it's starting to get warm there lol :)
hmmm ALSO, i've enrolled in the following courses:
victimes and crime, human learning and cognition, australian history (1860-1920), and drugs and alcohol studies 1... has anyone taken these courses or are already enrolled in these courses? If so... what's the courseload like and are they interesting at all?

hmmmm what else?? i'm not sure.... but just gonna apologize in advance b/c i've bombarded this forum with tons of questions lol.. i guess i'm just gettin real excited as comin down is just peepin around the corner :) hehe

ohhhhh and one other thing... i keep trying to add a profile pic up however it keeps saying all my files are too large... i've minimized them as much as possible but still :S weird!! 100 x 100 megapixels must be TINY man haha

anyway.... any questions, advice, pointers, tips, comments etc is welcomed!!
i look forward to hearing from you guys ;)
Take care

Hi Mel,

I've heard that people at the Bankstown Campus are pretty nice. I wouldn't know firsthand because I'm at Parramatta Campus. I can't tell you much about the uni life there either, but if it's anything like Parramatta's it's not that great - but you make what you want from it I guess!

Travelling to the City may take a bit more than 30 mins (especially in traffic) by driving and I think the way the trains are going lately it'd take you closer to an hour to get from Bankstown to Sydney on a train. If you get an express service it won't be as long, but they're pretty rare.

In regards to beaches - the most popular and well known ones like Bondi, Bronte etc will take you longer to get to than the city, but they're all in the same general area so I guess it'll be worth the travel (for a tourist anyway!) Other beaches that are closer would be Cronulla and the surrounding beaches and even the beaches in the National Park which are just as, if not more, beautiful than Bondi etc. If you want to travel a bit further down the coast, you'll find Wollongong, but it is close to an hours drive. If you want to know whereabouts these places are a really good website is www.whereis.com that'll give you maps, directions, just about everything you need.

Here are some other websites about Sydney attractions and sights, as well as the nightlife, travel and just info on Sydney in general:

http://www.voyeurmagic.com.au/
http://www.tourismwollongong.com/
http://www.zoo.nsw.gov.au/ - keep in mind that Taronga is in Sydney, Western Plains isn't!

http://www.harbourbridge.com.au/
http://www.starcity.com.au/dir013/internetpublishing.nsf/content/intro

So I hope this has been of some help to you! Enjoy your stay, whenever you get here and try to get out and about to see as much of Sydney as you can!

Regards,
Pam

lol everyone' askin what people are like at each campus but i mean... there's isn't THAT big a difference:)

ther's gonne be a few bums wherever you are, but the majority of people are really nice:) and we all totally understand that the international students aren't as sure bout some stuff when you first get here so we're happy to help so don't be scared to just asked someone friendly lookin on campus:)

if you want, go to the uws sit and you can get the link for the Student Associations, UWS Connect etc page - there's a few social clubs and stuff you can join so you can have a look on tehre to get an idea of the social aspects of the uni - ie the fun stuff:)

plus - make sure you check out transport to and from uni campuses and to n from other places like clubs n pubs n shops coz you're gonna wanna know all that lol :)

i recall now about my stint at bankstown during my class to improve essay writing, open to all students as well as many other classes to help students, open before new students...and explroing bankstown, yeah its like a small flat with units, id describe them as small and cosy..very modern, green and there is a gym and sports shop i think so its pretty ok, bankstown is the sports campus so you will se a lot of trophies showing off its stuff.

but bankstown is a small campus compared to like penrith...but its tucked in a nice place.
