Does it reboot at a particular point in the boot up? Or is it random?

I had this problem,

I realised that we were now in summer, and my CPU FAN was turned down to low, and the CPU was overheating, then reseting my comp 10/15mins into it. :)

yep i second grizzly's diagnosis. take the case off and run a desk fan blowing into it and see if that helps. this happened to me, though in my case a dodgy repair shop had used sealant to stop the fan from running full speed. f***ers.

I've had my machine since 2001 and I still find it adequate.

Anyway to my answer, I have to agree with sunny that It may be faulty RAM, It happened to me a couple of weeks ago, one of my 256 modules carked it and I couldnt boot into windows (Same problem with windows has failed to load and a BSOD) or linux (Kernel panics and Xserver wouldnt start). When booting up check in the bios for the total ram amount you have, If it is less then it used to be (Thats what happened to me it showed me 258 instead of the whole 512) then a module is screwed.

Actually, yeah, or a hair dryer that can do cold blowing works well.

hmm could be ram yeah. another thing that happened once was the floppy drive wasnt seated correctly and every time youd put in or eject a floppy the machine would boot. also if the case got knocked sometimes it would reboot. at first we thought it was the ram so we made a memtest boot disk and inserted it. once it started running my boss thought hed check the ram on another machine ... and ejected the floppy, giving another reboot :D

we fixed it by the tried and true "take everything out and put it back in" method

try doing "Revert too saved settings" or reinstalling windows, I've had dodgy windows installations

try too rule out software problems first

Hrm. It may be software, however he did specify that formatting doesn't work - therefore unless it is XP or a driver conflict, then it's probably hardware. I can also vouch for the ram problem, 256mb sdram sticks seem to be very problematic!

Download the precompiled version for the media you want to use (ISO/binary/USB/floppy). Use the floppy package to create a bootable floppy with memtest on it.
