Has anyone ever done it?

I have 7 subjects to go before I graduate problem is 1 is an annual subject and I have been offered a job overseas starting in july for 12 months. So after this session ill have 3 subjects left but when I come back next year in July I will have to wait 6 months until the new year to take my annual subject. So I figured I might as well travel for that 6 months or keep on working then come back in feb and finish my degree.

that means a deferment of 18 months...not sure if its possible but I think this work is a good opportunity and would like to take it. Im studying at wollongong

When I asked about this sort of thing with my university they said that so long as you studied one subject in the year, then you didn't need to seek leave for time in that year. So if your university follows the same policy then you'd be ok, however it is probably best to give them a ring and check.
