assess the potential of ethanol as an alternative fuel and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of its use (COLUMN 1)

Process information from secondary sources to summarise the use of ethanol as an alternative car fuel, evaluating the success of current usage. (COLUMN 2)

How do you answer differently for these questions? Especially the current usage part? thanks

The first one is just as a fuel for producing energy while the second one is specific to cars. For the first one, you'd talk about how ethanol is renewable, completely combusts easily and is much more environmentally friendly than current fossil fuels but at the same time its production is costly, requires a heat source (37 degrees) which reduces its effectiveness and also requires large areas of land to grow crops.

The second one, you'd talk more about its use as a car fuel and compare it to petrol. You would discuss how it is beneficial in that it produces less pollutants, completely combusts better due to the oxygen present within it which helps reduces soot build up int the engine BUT is uneconomical and current car engines cannot support high proportions of ethanol as it is corrosive and specific engines would be needed. For current usage, you'd probably have to mention E10 fuel that is a blend of ethanol and petrol that it used in Australia today.

Just to add onto Timeflies' answer, the focus of the column 1 and column 2 is different, for example, if you read the dot points more closely, column 1 is asking you to EVALUATE, i.e make a judgment about the advantages and disadvantages of ethanol, and this is strictly related to ethanol's chemical and physical properties as well as the price of production to produce it(particularly from renewable sources). Column 2 does not require you to make a judgment on ethanol use, but rather requires you to SUMMARISE different uses of ethanol and EVALUATE its success in relation to current usage as a biofuel-the focus then is more on contemporary usage rather than just on the intrinsic properties of ethanol. Hope this helps a bit:)

Just adding:

The verb used plays a major part in differing the two dot points.

yes; make a quick judgement at the end
Well depending on the question you get, it should actually affect your whole answer, as the structure of the answer should be different for a particular verb.
