That will answer most of your questions. If I had $600 on me right now, to be spent on a digital camera, I would recommend the Kodak line of digital cameras.

These include:

Kodak LS633
Kodak DX6330
Kodak DX6340
Kodak DX6440

You can't go wrong on a DX range of Kodak Cameras (the LS range is also nice).

Or combine a whole heap of digital camera threads into one reference point, stickied (as suggested by kimmeh). :)

i dunno how much it is, but we have a canon ixus (3 megapixels) i think it was around that mark (not entirely sure, coz we got a printer and heap of extras and stuff that pulled the price up)

really tiny (as in fits quite easily in your pocket)

@anti: I'm not sure about this, but maybe, just maybe, Lord Ac will use it to clean his car. :hammer:

But seriously, I think he would be like any other avid (and rising) home photographer. Taking a camera with him for outings, social functions, to the beach, special events, family occasions and the usual happy snaps of himself, family and friends. Standard shots you would take on an 'analogue' camera.

Nothing fancy (eg panoramic shots). :)

*slaps huy* :)

Well, I just got my camera (optio s) and I had a very specific set of needs :D small, light, quick start up time (not shutter release - more the whole warm up process. i had an ixus before.. soo.. slow), at least 3x optical zoom, decent but not overwhelmingly bright flash. and other stuff i forget now i have it :D

No problem Lord Ac, :)
Whats the differnce between optical zoom of 2x and 3x
1x. :p

I never use my optical zoom (10X Zoom, 3x Optical, 3.3x Digital, Kodak DX4330, 3.1MP, 1.8" LCD), so chances are, you won't be using optical (or digital) zoom all that much - just move in closer! ;)

Zooming is only required when you're framing subjects and the like (people are standing too close, or too far away).

You'll be fine with any camera, but as had been previously said, go for the large optical zoom, over digital.
