It's a question of probability. It's highly unlikely that we are the ONLY life form in a vast universe (which we know next to nothing of).

This is a fascinating question, and one that will most likely not be resolved in our lifetimes.

Just think, what other life forms might be like...how they live, are they superior, inferior? what values they might have..... its fascinating.

Okay, seriously, it's hard to believe that we are the only life in the entire galaxy. I don't think that we'll ever get a definitive answer to the question of the existence of Extraterrestrial life, though. At least, not in our lifetime.

The existence of life somewhere else in the universe is pretty much a given if you have any semblance of an understanding of science.

The Drake equation may not be completely accurate, but it is also modelling a different phenomenon. Namely: what's the likelihood of us encountering intelligent life? That's a possibly an altogether much smaller chance.

people always say "there's billions of trillions of planets so there must be life somewhere"

but if it turns out that the chance of life arising on even an earth-like planet are something like 1 in 10^400000, which it could well be then those numbers of planets are quite small, in which case u'd expect it would have only happened once

That's a pretty silly point to bring up, though, since the available evidence suggests that abiogenesis is far, far more common and easier than that, and that's just for earth-like biology.

Perhaps more importantly, though, evidence seems to suggest the observable universe - what most people, including scientists, refer to as 'the universe', even when talking about the chances of life - is but a drop in the ocean of the actual universe, with the density of stars at the edges of the observable universe being exactly the same as the density in the middle.

What available evidence would that be?

The available evidence suggests that it's easy to make organic compounds like amino acids, that's about it.

We can't even account for how random chemical processes allowed information to be stored in nucleic acids and translated to proteins.

Yes, I do. It's every possibility that whatever caused the start of life (although it was a miracle) on this relatively tiny planet could have occured at least in one other place in the limitlessly vast universe...

Yeah and I agree with the above thought. It's simply arrogance to think that we are the only life in a place that we don't even know the end of.

Yeah (to the extraterrestrial question, not the one about alien Jews).
But will the people of Earth ever find that life? Probably not.
Even if it's just an itty bitty amoeba we're talking about here, the chances of their creation are very minute. This improbability is resolved by the vast magnitude of solar systems, of planets, of suns. However, the improbability of the existence of extraterrestrial life within our planet's reach is one that cannot so easily be put aside.
