The detention of illegal immigrant is a breach on the constitution law and international human rights. In the constitution it states the government’s job is to ‘ensure the liberties that we as free people promote’. The government is not ensuring this liberty towards these illegal refugees. In light of protest form the public and international pressures, the Australian government has ratified the convention on the Status of Refugees. Although the government has done this, illegal immigrants are still in these detention centres waiting for up to 4 to 5 years for their application for citizenship to be processed. There is also a breach of the Convention on the Rights of Children as every child under 15 must go to school in Australia.
