NESA (as seen in the English Extension syllabus document) defines related texts as texts that students have chosen in addition to their prescribed texts. The study of these related texts provides students with the opportunity to explore a wider variety of texts related to the particular module. Students draw their chosen texts from a variety of sources, in a range of genres and media.
English Extension 1 students are required to study at least two related texts in addition to the prescribed texts that you will be studying. It is likely that you will be required to respond with reference to one (or more) related texts in the English Extension 1 HSC exam. Consider Question 2 from the 2020 English Extension 1 HSC exam:
In your response, refer to TWO of your prescribed texts and ONE related text of your own choosing.
Question 2 from the 2020 English Extension 1 HSC exam requires a response with reference to exactly one related text.
Additionally, consider Question 2 from the 2021 English Extension 1 HSC exam:
In your response, refer to TWO of your prescribed texts and at least ONE related text of your own choosing.
Question 2 from the 2021 English Extension 1 HSC exam requires a response with reference to at least one related text.
I hope this helps!
