Hi everyone:)

Over the holidays we were given an assignment to complete.

We had to test a range of household substances and see what would dissolve in ethanol.

One of the substances I chose was water. I know ethanol dissolves in water, but because I was testing ethanol as the solvent and water as the solute, is it correct to say that the water dissolved in the ethanol?

I.e. can I write it as:

CH3CH2OH(l) + H2O(l) --> H20(aq)

Or must it remain as:

CH3CH2OH(l) + H2O(l) --> CH3CH2OH(aq)

Thanks for your help:)

Generally, we say that ethanol and water are miscible at any proportion.

Usually, we say that the ethanol dissolves in water such that CH3CH2OH(l) + H2O(l) --> CH3CH2OH(aq) + H2O(l)

The problem with your example is that you MUST show balanced equations - never neglect one part (water).

Also, would you be able to check these equations? I'm not sure if I did them correctly...

CH3CH2OH(l) + Mg3Si4O10(OH)2(s) --> Mg3Si4O10(OH)2(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + (C6H8(NO2)2O5)(l) --> (C6H8(NO2)2O5)(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C3H6O(l) --> C3H6O(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C17H35COOH(l) --> C17H35COOH(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C15H31COOH(l) --> C15H31COOH(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + NaC12H25SO4(l) --> NaC12H25SO4(aq)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C8H8O3(l) --> C8H8O3(aq)

Thank you once again:)

Oh ok - thank you so much:)

I need to balance the other equations as well then... just a sec:)

So my equations should be:

CH3CH2OH(l) + Mg3Si4O10(OH)2(s) --> Mg3Si4O10(OH)2(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + (C6H8(NO2)2O5)(l) --> (C6H8(NO2)2O5)(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C3H6O(l) --> C3H6O(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C17H35COOH(l) --> C17H35COOH(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C15H31COOH(l) --> C15H31COOH(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + NaC12H25SO4(l) --> NaC12H25SO4(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

CH3CH2OH(l) + C8H8O3(l) --> C8H8O3(aq) + CH3CH2OH(l)

Is this correct?

Thanks so much:)
