You can use anthropomophism - how the jews are made like animals, religious symbolism, strong imagery (of all assortions, tactile, aural, visual, and olfactory) in the memories for empathy.

intertexuality is a big one.

the interviews with his parents (the massive sections in italics) and even the references to documents (letters, certificates, report cards, etc) basically, anything that PROVES their memories. This is the history side of things...

Baker is after all an historian.
