Say if you're ranked last in a subject at school...say English..
but in the HSC, your exam raw mark is the highest in your school, ie you come 1st..

Will you, because of your rank being last, get the lowest mark that your school got?

If so, what's the point of doing really well in the final HSC exam if your rankings are fixed already?

Your examination mark would be whatever you attained in the exam, which in this case is the top exam mark.

Your moderated assessment mark would be set (roughly) equal to the lowest examination mark, because you were ranked last in your assessments.

The average of these two figures is your HSC mark.

Obviously, both components are important - to think otherwise is just silly.
