I have no idea how to get them to work. In VLC, I get the following error:

subtitle: failed to recognize subtitle type
main: no suitable demux module for `/subtitle:///Users/***********/Movies/The Elite Squad/tes1.sub'
subtitle: failed to recognize subtitle type
main: no suitable demux module for `/subtitle:///Users/***********/Movies/Eastern Promises/eastern.sub'
MPlayer doesn't give an error, but won't display the subtitles.

Anyone have any ideas?

'These subtitles are UTF-16 encoded and VLC currently does not support this. You can use an advanced texteditor to resave the file in the UTF-8 text encoding.'

Cheers. I've been trawling through lots of threads, and never came across that information. TextEdit does some crazy shit when I open up the .sub file with it, so Iill get jEdit and hope that does the trick.
