is this just the son->father->grandfather backup system?

Grandfather = oldest backup
Father = older backup
son = old backup

You keep three, if the latest one or two are corrupted somehow, ie. unknown virus, etc.

usually a backup system in an infrustructure will look something like

son=daily
father=weekly
grandfather=monthly
