what is actually the difference?

is it just that halons have ALL their hydrogen atoms substituted with halogens? while haloalkanes can still have hydrogen atoms?

I'm pretty sure about the following:
- Halons are compounds of C, Br with other halogens. Thus, no H is present while Br is quintessential.
- Haloalkanes are compounds of any alkanes whose H atoms are replaced by one or more hologen atoms.

You're basically right for the 2nd one that haloalkanes might/ mightn't have any H atoms.
