What is the best univesity for engineering? I put down biomedical enginering at Sydney uni as my first preference, but i've been told (NB. by a UTS student...) that only UTS and UNSW are very good for engineering!?! do employers really prefer UNSW/UTS students over SYDNEY engineering students? anywayz... please share your thoughts. thanks.

UNSW is the best, I'm told. On the other hand, different specialisations may be better at different universities. Employers don't actually use which univesity you attended as a criteria for employment, ever. Usually it's more relevant experience and performance at interview...

No its shouldnt really matter much. But that being said UNSW is probably a bit better. UNSW engineering was ranked #1 is the country this year (bastards stole it from us :p)

but yeah this was the ranking for the top 50 unis in the world engineering for 2005

16. UNSW
18. Uni Melb
24. Monash
29. ANU
40. QU
48. USYD

i'd go to UNSW

UNSW cane USyd at electrical disciplines, and not much more.

Go to whichever you enjoy the campus environment more/is easier to get to or whatever.

Definitely not true.

Just on biomed, I think USyd is the only uni in Sydney that offers that specialisation in a bachelor degree.

Well the first one comes directly from engineering employers so take your choice.

On another note, I don't know the reliability of the Good Uni Guide... but according to them Wollongong and Newcastle have both the lowest unemployment rates and the highest graduating salaries for engineering. (Newcastle has the highest grad salaries, 4% unemployment while UOW is 2nd on salary yet lowest on unemplyment 2%...though the UOW booklet claims that they achieved 100% employment in some areas). Anyways I'm a intending Com person so bleh!

I am guessing that location has an effect on this...given that main industries around these areas is related to enginnering?

I'm assuming though you don't what to move to study there...let alone work there..

well in the engineering book for unsw it says its the best for traditional engineering such as civil, eletrical and to some degree for emerging unique courses.

but 1 thing I know for sure is that usyd is better for anything in the aeromech stream

ex aerospace is part of the mech engineering at unsw and you get to focus specialise in it for the last year as the first 3 years are core subjects for mech at unsw.where as at usyd you get to specialise in aerospace for 3 years.Well obviously at usyd you would learn more about aerospace and more likely to get a job in that specific job and you graduate with bachelorof engineering in aerospace but at unsw you would graduate with bachelor of mechanical engineering majoring in aerospace which also has its benefits of also being employed in more diverse streams not just restricted to aerospace

I had an interview with the lecturer at unsw he said "the guys at usyd are better than the guys at unsw",so yeah the dude said it himself but he counteracted himself by saying that unsw engineers arent as smart but are attractive employers because they are more cost efficient

so yeah some unis are better than others in specific streams not across all engineering faculties

yeah heaps of the people there get them cadetships with bluescope steel, which i hear is easy to get at uow but its part time not full time uni

Yea the Aerospace course at UNSW is a Mech degree majoring in Aero. Whereas at USYD and and the degree im doing at Monash, the Aerospace Degree is seperate from Mech and you specalise right away

University gradings and standards are not all the same. Most big employers will take UNSW and USyd first.
