Right now I have an assignment which is about Niccolo Machiavelli's 'The Prince' and we had to write an 1000 word short story about a character who knows how to keep power, currently i'm going for a more historical based approach but the feedback I got said it was a good idea but poor execution.

With historical fiction a good way to do it is to have the fiction in the foreground and the history in the background.
ie. You let there be a sprinkling of historical facts and details, but don't let it be the forefront or else you'll lose interest since it is meant to be a creative piece.
So one way may be to have mentions of historical foods or traditions in passing in a conversation.
As always, remember to revise and reread your work.
