describe how Bohr’s postulates led to the development of a mathematical model to account for the existence of the hydrogen spectrum:


In the textbook, it shows this long and complicated mathematical deriving... but my teacher said to ignore it.


How do you exactly answer this??

Well, the Bohr model was able to provide a basis for the Balmer series with his second postulate:

hf = Ef - Ei f = final, i = initial

He derived an expression for the energy of the orbits by combining the expression for potential energy of the electron-nucleus system to its kinetic energy which turned out to be

En = 1/n^2 x Ei

therefore we can see that hf = 1/n^2f x E1 - 1/n^2i x E1 = (1/n^2f - 1/n^2i)x E1


and since c = fy (y = lambda), f = c/y

then 1/y = E1/hc(1/n^2f - 1/n^i) = Rh(1/n^2f - 1/n^2i ) and that's the Balmer formula

And so we could then calculate the wavelengths of the hydrogen atom. And of course the Balmer series was known as the original series of spectral lines and had like 4 spectra lines in the visible region of the spectrum or something
