Depends which subject. I do the former with sciences, and the latter with maths. It's probably not an ideal approach, and I'm not even sure if it works for me, but I guess it's somewhat suitable for me since my school doesn't have a shortage of exam papers and I just want to familiarise myself with the mix of of topics rather than replicating any exams.
