Is it only me who thinks there school is marking the Eng std paper too harshly? I've just received my first assessment task back and scored a 10/15 and that place me around top 10 in standard(there's around 100+ students in standard)... The average for this task is 5/15..!!! Last year in standard only 3 people in my class (around 20 ppl in my class)scored band 5...Is my school just terrible at english or are our teachers marking way too hard? Please share your opnions/experience with me. And, will this affect my atar terribly or will BOS "adjust" my marks if i can remain top 10?

Yeh, that sounds similar to mine last year.
Some do mark quite hard but it's like ninetypercent says, it all comes down to rank.

That said unless all the students are writing at fairly similar standards, I reckon marks should be better dispersed to discriminate between better students as there will be a lot of people ranked equal X due to so many getting the same mark.

A raw mark of 10/15 is at band 5 range...and given that only 3 people got band 5 last year (not a very strong result) I think it's close to HSC standards (provided the criteria is similar to official HSC criteria) under the assumption of similarity between years. A band 4 is pretty much around 50% raw mark...lol

Any chance you go to Sefton? They notoriously mark harshly. [Trebla can vouch for this].

The Bands aren't calculated from percentage. My overall percentage for HSC English Advanced internally was about 82%. However, my internal HSC mark was 93.

If I remember correctly, the area of study HSC marking criteria for a given section (out of 15) is meant to be something like:

13 - 15 = band 6 range
10 - 12 = band 5 range
7 - 9 = band 4 range
4 - 6 = band 3 range
1 - 3 = band 2 range

If you look at the notes from the marking centre, you'll notice that the criteria is arranged in this way.

10 students out of 71 got band 5 or 6 at my school in the HSC last year.
Compared to 19/84 getting band 6 in the advance course
*worried*

My school marked incredibly harsh. For Trial, i got 55% and topped the exam (Final Rank: 1st). I would think that would correlate to a HSC mark of 72-73 perhaps? I got 87 HSC mark for Std English. It was a joke. I did almost nothing in english all year because i thought i was terrible, getting marks like that.
