Maybe it has to do with the people who are excluded in the ranking process. The ones that got a uai of 30 or less are given an asterix.

The reason the median is higher than 50 is because you are ranked according to what would have happened if everyone from that year of your SC was finishing HSC - however many drop out or do pathways so that the number of candidates is different. For example(these are just made up numbers btw):
say 90, 000 people did the SC in 03, then the top 45, 000 HSC candidates in 05 would be getting 50 or higher however because of the smaller candidature there might only be 70, 000 HSC students so the top 64% of the HSC candidature would get 50 or higher.

If you get a UAI of 80, it means you beat 80% of the people who did the HSC, assuming that all of the students from year 10 continued into year 12.

Haha...true. A UAI is just a measure of how well you can rote learn (for most subjects).

how many people are allocated to each UAI number/rank? Since it is a rank, can say 10 people get a UAI of 85.55 and 20 people get a UAI od 85.60? Just for example..........

Once the marks out of 500 are found (total of the scaled marks in best 10 units), the top set of marks receives a UAI of 100, the next set get 99.95, etc. So I think a different number of people can get each rank - it depends on their aggregate scaled marks.

There's roughly 20-30 people for each discrete UAI, varying each year based on candidature.

our dean of studies at my school told us at info night that the ppl with highest mark out of 500 get uai of 100, then next 25 get 99.95, next 25 get 99.90 and so on but im not sure thats right now - she also told us we didn't need to know anything.worry about about scaling and aligning til end of school so we're all really ignorant.

This is true. The only inaccuracy is the 25 people per UAI score. Different candidatures apply for the UAI every year so it is selected number or percentage of people and not a fixed number of people per UAI score.
The marks are scaled and aggregated meaning that the scaled marks are added from the best 8 units plus 2 units of English to form a score out of 500, where each unit accounts for 50 marks. The top group of students in the state according to that score get a UAI of 100.00, the next group get 99.95 and so on.
