Also to note: i’m currently in y10 this year so i rlly don’t wanna screw up y11 and y12.. so i rlly have to choose wisely as I don’t want to regret my decision

So basically I moved to a full selective highschool this year and am doing quite okay academically (I think i’m in the top 5 ranks for math and science out of a cohort of 140 ppl, not too sure for english though). However, travelling is very far and takes 2.5hours each day, not to mention, very tiring. If i go back to my old school (partially selective) it is ranked significantly worse (160’s), but much closer (only around ten min drive and fourty minutes public transport back home). I feel like in senior years it would be extremely tough to struggle this with relaxing time and studying as my time management isn’t the greatest. However, i’m wondering how much cohort affects my atar? I get tutoring for all the subjects (asian 5 most likely) i’m doing in y12 so i think i’ll do fine.

Pros/cons of current school:
Pros:
-ranked better (top 30’s)
-better cohort
-when i do the hsc it’ll probs be quieter than my old school which is good because i struggle to focus with noise
-competition

Cons:
-i don’t really like it here… feel sad everyday coming into this school as cringe as it sounds
-travel time is so much
-tired after school everyday
-teachers are worse here
-they don’t proofread exams
-don’t have the unsw gateway entry thing

Pros/cons of old school
Pros:
-liked my friends better
-have the unsw gateway entry thing
-probably will feel happier at this school
-have more time to study and relax (won’t get burnt out as easier) as i finish much earlier here and travel time is less(by the time i get home from this school my currently school had just finished)
- teachers are better here
-they actually do proofread their exams

Cons:
-less competition
-cohort not very strong
-a lot of eshays always truanting and fooling around —-> kinda noisy during hsc exam most likely but ig my current school is noisy too, just not during actual class times



So what do you think is better? I’m kinda gravitating towards moving back to my old school but i’m still not entirely sure.

i think it's definitely better to move back to your old school. you don't really like your new school, you travel so long just to get home, the teachers at your new school are worse, while moving back to your old school means you have a better support network of friends and teachers, the benefit of gateway, and you don't have to travel super long. i think all of those reasons are more than enough to move back. yeah, the rank of your new school is good and it's a selective school so the cohort is better, but it's not worth it i think in your opinion. to minimise your cohort's performance on your atar, especially if the cohort is not really good, you should just aim to have high ranks in all your subjects (in a low ranking school, aim to be first for all your subjects). since you're top 5 for math and science in a high ranked full selective then it shouldn't be hard to be ranked 1 for stem subjects in your old school

i also went to a full selective school (not the one you went to i don't think), it took me around 1hr-1hr 10 min in the mornings and 1hr 30 min+ in the afternoons (so i would get home at around 4:45-5). my sibling goes to a different school than me and it would take less time though

Imo old school sounds better, a better environment for u it seems and u really need that study and relax time to succeed in hsc and the lowe travel time gives u that. Whilst rank isn’t everything, both schools r pretty highly ranked anyways, and since ur ranking quite highly in ur subjects u wouldn’t be too affected by a Slightly weaker cohort at ur old school.

Additionally u said u would be happy at ur old school, that is super important bc the hsc is so stressful , u really need to be in a good state of mind to push ur self during the hsc. U also say competition is a pro of the new school but u seem quite motivated to succeed anyway, so as long as u can keep that up at the old school that shouldn’t be an issue.

keep in mind that’s my opinion but for me I would absolutely take the old school. Rank 160 in the state is still really good and given ur motivated and doing well , a good environment and low commute time would help keep u motivated during the stress that is the hsc. Good luck!

not very good anymore… and also it still takes me an hour to get home lol. by the time i reach home from my old school i would of just finished school at hahs (or any other school rlly)

also an hour is not too bad of a commute, abt as long as it took me but ofc id rather just live nearby, unfortunately was not rlly possible for me

quality of the teachers and students have been readily declining, the rank is dropping very hard rn and from what i can see i highly doubt hurlstone will improve since the grades have been getting successively dumber collectively (truth is truth). also theres this one guy i friggin despise that goes there and his presence would ruin my entire hs experience.

i know alot of the hurlstone cohort (mine at least) and i can for sure say that collectively they are not doing very well…
