Really? I'd consider E.H. Carr to be a modern historian, along with postmodernists and post-postmodernists. He is believed to have pre-empted postmodernism anyway. If he's not modern, then what is he? Ancient? I hardly think so. Modern should include any historian from around 1950 onwards, which is essentially when EH Carr began writing as a historian.
When you use Carr though, my teacher always advises us to accompany him with Elton, to show the historical debate. Apparently the markers really like it.
