AdvertisementAn Israeli has been stabbed to death by a gang of men who jumped out of a car and cornered him outside a general store in Sydney's Bondi.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff today said witnesses to the brutal attack in Bondi had told him the 36-year-old victim was an Israeli national.

Police were called to the shop at the intersection of Glenayr Avenue and Beach Road at Bondi Beach about 9.45pm (AEST) yesterday.

Outside the store, a man with multiple stab wounds was slumped on the footpath. He was treated at the scene and taken to St Vincents Hospital for emergency surgery but died several hours later.

Mr Alhadeff said members of the Jewish community called him last night with details of the incident.

"Word came back to us last night from people in the area who saw it and found out that the man was an Israeli," he said.

"There was a car load of people who stopped and they got out and they assaulted him pretty brutally and some of them were hitting him with a pole or something and there was multiple stabs."

He said the incident did not appear to be related to the conflict in Lebanon.

A spokeswoman for police media said she could not confirm reports the man was from Israel and could not give a description of the gang.

Police are yet to identify the man or to contact with his relatives," she said.

Detectives have established a crime scene outside the store and specialist forensic police are examining the area for clues.

This is very sad how the conflict has spread down all the way to Sydney. Does anyone else have any information about this? I was in the area (Bondi Junction) at the time and heard nothing from this. I feel great fear for my family and friends atm, which includes quite a few Israelis (mostly who have moved here to get away from the conflict).

The police are holding back the nationality of the murderer(s) in order not to spark any more animosity. This is going to further strain things at this peace rally tomorrow.

I don't think it's related. They used poles but drove off in a nissan pajero?
One man is described as "178cm tall, of medium build with shoulder length dark hair and clean shaven" It doesn't really sound to me to be a description of a Lebanese male. It's quite unusual to see 'shoulder length' hair and clean shaven.

Also, it was a 9:30 PM, on the same road connecting to Barracluff Park which on a Saturday Night would have been used for SOCCER TRAINING... duh... Therefore it must be in someway related... I believe Queens Park Soccer Club would have had training there because the Queens Park in waverly would have been flooded from the nights of raining before. Also, I think another club would have been there (on a saturday night duh).

Therefore I conclude that questioning the teams on the field would be best as the area would be relatively free of people at the time. (Also, how would they know that at 8:30 pm there would be a jewish man outside of a convenience store?) It's related to the soccer field some how. (I don't think they're lebanese but it's a possibility, he probably owed the people money as people from the close 'gambling' clubs put alot of money in... it's irregular for an israeli to gamble but it's possible. Otherwise It could have been loan sharks or a theft. ($860,000) is the cost of cheap property in the area... (not typical for lebanese people... and there are 3 roads in and out... none of which would have a lebanese man in the area....)

(Just my observations from weeks of watching Monk...) Btw, Tony Shalhoub who produces and acts as adrian monk is lebanese... (found out recently)

Oops, I mean they have 'soccer games' in the Park on saturdays, not training it's definate it's about 25 meters away from the field on game day. Relatively quiet on saturdays otherwise. (Probably an altercation which was caused by something on the Field or gambling in the Game...)

Also, that is a predominantly jewish area so it may not have been an isolated incident perhaps a regular robbery. Or the Israeli man cussed them out and then they reacted by stabbing him. (otheriwse related to the game or they came from the game).
