• Predict the difference in inheritance patterns if two genes are linked: help no idea how the crosses work

The inheritance of linked genes leads to the simple Mendelian ratio 3:1 because the alleles are on the same chromatid and the whole chromatid moves completely to the new cell. Only if crossing-over occurs will this ratio change, which is the case for dihybrid crosses giving the 9:3:3:1 ratio. I personally hate linked genes lol im not sure how to explain it using punnet squares though

If two genes are linked it means that they are located physically close to each other on the same chromosome.

Therefore independant assortment doesn't occur as it normally would and thus the offspring ratio isn't predictable in a simple mendelian manner.

The 3:1 thing isn't actually right although it is in the book as it doesn't take into account crossing over between the genes
