You could try Penny Moon or Tree Of Life or any other pagan New Age type store because I remember seeing similar dresses to those medieval type dresses you may be looking for. I sort of find that look very attractive. I'll look it up and see if I can find any websites that promote it in Australia but I doubt it'll be cheap.

Hey, I don't know where you could find an elven style dress but I'd recommend getting one made. I think there are some websites where you can find patterns. I like the dresses that both arwen and eowyn wore too - especially the lavender dress that arwen wore in ROTK. I was thinking of getting a similar dress made for my year 12 formal but changed my mind in the end. I think it would be great to get a specially designed dress.

The dresses are indeed very beautiful, and it'd probably be better to have it made. If you are looking for cheap unique fabrics try Cabramatta or Fairfield as they have alot of cheap fabric stores. My fashion designer friend regularly finds stuff that the City doesn't have though I don't know if they'll have the specific fabrics you're looking for.

My personal recommendation is actually Spotlight.

I've been to the 'warehouse' type fabric stores in Cabramatta and whilst I think they are great for stocking variety in generic fabric (plain dyed chiffon, satin, tulle etc) and beautiful heavy laces/embroidered tulle and organza, for a design like this you'd probably want a good quality "evening" fabric of medium weight/excellent drape and this is an area in which Cabramatta type stores do not specialise in... however, Spotlight does :) *NB there is one Cabramatta store that sells beautiful plain and embroidered silks, however these are quite expensive...

Spotlight also has a very wide and beautiful selection of trims :)

How about Lincraft? I know Spotlight sells pretty decent stuff.

Lincraft can have some very nice stuff (they normally have one BEAUTIFUL set of fabrics per season) but variety wise, they haven't got anything on Spotlight :( Lincraft has really been dropping in fabric range over the years since they've headed into financial problems (this is one of the reasons they've been focussing a lot more on homewares) :( Their bridal and evening section used to be FANTASTIC, now it's just the few really nice fabrics here and there :(

General quality of fabrics is higher, though.

I had an elven formal dress for my Year 10 graduation. My mother made mine based on a mixture of patterns we found online and in books - glitterfairy posted heaps of really good links.

In Year 10, I stumbled across Alleycatscratch: http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/. They've got all sorts of ideas for making an elven inspired dress. If you go to Characters --> Elves (at the bottom of the page, or go to http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Elves.htm), you can choose Arwen or Galadriel and see all the dresses they wear and the ideas people have for making them. It's a fantastic site.

Do get your dress made if it's possible - you'll find that most formal shops don't really stock such unique dresses.

Yeah, I tried looking for Australian based formal dress websites and not one of them had any dress even remotely close to those designs. Most consist of straps or haltertops. I actually want the shirt Seraph wears in The Matrix with the long loose sleeves. :D

formal dress shops ftl, excluding Harts and a handful of other places.

There was this shop in Hornsby that sold your basic Princess Line strapless dress in various shades of taffeta, they also sold all your generic princess-line bodice and flared skirt type dresses too. And for OUTRAGEOUS prices - basically the only "variety" you got was colour :p

a good place to start looking is in your local paper - there are usually a few seamstresses listed there :)

*it's good if they're local to you, because then it's less trekking around for fitting etc :)
