Can anyone help me how to recognize chords and positions in both orchestral and solo music sheets?

1. Make a list of ALL the notes that are played within the time frame that the question asks (1st crotchet beat bar XYZ eg.)

2. Make a note of which is the LOWEST note that is played in the whole score

3. Going back to the list of played notes, erase all duplicates so you end up with 3-5 notes. In most HSC questions, 4 will the maximum amount of notes in a chord. Any other notes are most likely passing or auxiliary notes that arn't part of the chord. (wiki those if you don't know those terms)

4. Now rearrange the 3-4 notes so that each note letter is a 3rd (major or minor) interval from one another.

5. The note at the bottom is the root of the chord.

6. If the 2nd note is a major 3rd. Then it is a major chord. vice versa for a minor 3rd

7. If there are 4 notes and the top note is a tone below the root note, then it is a 7th chord.

7. If the root corresponds with the lowest note on the score, then it is in root position, if the lowest note is the 2nd note in your re-arranged note list, then it is in 1st inversion. etc for 2nd inversion.
