hey all,

just finished 1st year of Plan COMPB13715, except i chose a wrong subject in S1..
i am suppose to do phy1131 but i did phys1111. So in S2 i did phys1131.

so now i have to do phys1231 which is not offered in S1 2006 right? and i am just wondering what courses should i take next year, 2006. According to the CSE site

hxxp://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/undergrad/programs/COMPB13715.html

i need to do 6 subjects in S1 2006..that sounds pretty tough and it doesnt say anything on what courses i should do in S2, 2006. So, for the Commerce part, i want to do actuarial studies and i am wondering what courses should i take?
These are the courses i did for this year:

S1:
Phys1111, Math1131, Comp1011, Math1081
S2:
Phys1131, Math1231, Comp1021, Elec1011

any recommandations are appreciated, thanks in advance!

If possible, do Physics 1B NOW!

You then basically have to do
S1:
* ACCT1501 Accounting & Financial Mgt 1A (6 UOC)
* ECON1101 Microeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
* COMP2011 Data Organisation (6 UOC)
* ELEC2031 Circuits and Systems (3 UOC)
* MATH2510 Real Analysis (3 UOC)

S2:
* ACCT1511 Accounting & Financial Mgt 1B (6 UOC)
* ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
* COMP2121 Microprocessors & Interfacing (6 UOC)
* ELEC2032 Electronics and Systems (3 UOC)
* MATH2520 Complex Analysis (3 UOC)

or something like that..

fuck, handbook has the new flexible first year program stuff on it.... shit....

But you only did MATH1x31...
are you sure you want to do actuarial studies?

if your doing acturial as your commerce major, tell fce and they will tell you what courses to take.

Also i thought acturial your supposed to take MATH1151 not 1131. Better check it out dude.

hmmm, well according to hxxp://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2006/3715.html

that stage1 S1 and S2 are all engineering components, so that's why i did math1131 and math1231, and i thought for Stage2 S2 where it says its the commerce part, i should do the Math1151 there and rest of acturial studies courses? am i wrong?

thanks

You need to talk to FCE when you come back on whether you will get exemption for the MATH115x stuff

Yeah, i was implying the inverse of gman. 1151 exempts 1131. But does 1131 exempt 1151?

Thus my post of go see FCE, so they can help you sort out things.

Also that link is severly empty. Its got a generic 24uoc of science and engineering. You should make it that you know what your doing, cause in the case for acturial, it won't follow the same path as same accounting.

Well good luck, and don't use that link, it can only lead you to trouble. :)

I know and understand what you mean.

I know one person have use 1131 to exempt QMA & QMB, but I forgot 1151 > 1131 in terms of quantity

1151 covers 20~25% more than 1141 which covers more than 1131
so the answer is, no, it cannot be used to replace MATH1151

And 1131, 1141, 1151 maths can only be used to get exempt from QMA.
QMB is a stats course which is not covered in any first year maths course, so it cannot be exempted. The only way for a commerce student to get exempted from QMB is if they are doing a major which does not require statistics which is rare like hospitality.

So quoted me so fast, my edits don't even show :p

yeah 1131 + any stats course exempts qma+qmb.

But acturial in commerce have there own "special" math courses.

Gman, stop camping threads :D

ymj, you have gone about choosing all your courses the wrong way.
You will be able to do actuarial studies with MATH1x31 as a mid-year entry into actuarial studies, but I think they might only allow if you have very good results in MATHS. You might struggle with the harder ACTL subjects.

You can choose to do ACTL1001 to see how it goes, it is only offered in second session and does not have any pre-requisits.

Actuarial studies have strict plans and courses which you should take each semester as they are only offered in one semester, you should have shaped your COMP major around ACTL not the other way around.

so has anyone here got an exemption for QMA and QMB? if so which subjects did you do to get this exemption?

im exempted from qma+qmb

lets see if fce recognises this though

since i've passed both 1131+2859 in my program which says that is enough for qma+qmb exemption

so what course are you doing?

also, if you did get exempted for qma+qmb, can you still get a major in Business statistics? is it like as if you have ACTUALLY done the subject?

ok i looked through the handbook, and i found that i will be doing statistics in the following form, under my engineering component:

MATH2899 Applied Stats for Chem Eng

so if i do this subject and math1131, would i get an exemption for qma and qmb?

Again, you provided too little information to give direct answer.
Tell us what your degree is and majors... AND any other details...

for commerce/science
At least 6 units of credit of statistics selected from:

* ACTL2002 Prob & Stat for Actuaries (6 UOC)
* ECON1203 Quantitative Methods B (6 UOC)
* MATH1041 Stats for Life & Soc Sciences (6 UOC)
* MATH2801 Theory of Statistics (6 UOC)
* MATH2841 Statistics SS (6 UOC)
* MATH2901 Higher Theory of Statistics (6 UOC)
* PSYC2001 Research Methods 2 (6 UOC)
or alternatives statistics courses approved by the program advisor.
