Need Help Spotting Techniques (1 Viewer)

Im Currently doing English Advanced, i've just started the HSC course and I was not happy with my Preliminary Examination results, my teacher says its my Techniques, I need help spotting techniques, I understand everything about advanced english and with the material and extracts given, but I just have problems spotting techniques, obviously I can spot the easy ones like simile's and Metaphors, but I find it hard to spot the harder ones, which are worth a lot of marks in some areas....

Unless its a poem or short story, would you actually use the basic techinques like methapors/similies? I thought the techniques would be based more around motifs/symbols/characters rather than small literary techniques.
