I would think it means like how the poem appears at first glance, you know, before you look beneath the surface and start analysing it.

I suppose that would mean that I would have to write about what the person is talking about in the poem? Bit confused, my teacher landed this work onto me earlier as I was down with the sickness yesterday and I didn't really know what to do when I pulled out my notebook just an hour ago.
